<rss:link>http://blog.ohtwentyone.com/blog/newWork_terraHawkBrochure</rss:link>
<rss:description> The folks over at TerraHawk asked us to design another promotional piece for them. They needed simple piece than can fit in a standard-sized envelope and serve as a mailer as well as a hand-out. After a brief conversation regarding the effectiveness of the "standard trifold" brochure, we decided to try something clever that would create a lasting impression for the reader...something that to create an "Aha!" moment.

After kicking around some ideas regarding folds and cuts and photography, we arrived at a relatively simple solution to use a single fold and a single die cut to create a fun little game of "before and after" out of the MUST's primary function, a surveillance capsule that extends from the top of the vehicle. By creating a cut that follows the top of the capsule and using it as a tab to hold the fold shut, we create a "before" version of the photo, with the capsule stowed in the vehicle.

The end result of the simple design trick is a surprising bit of interaction with the piece and, by extension, the product itself.

<rss:description> A little while back we announced that TRS Network Professionals had engaged us to help them with an identity transformation project. Although the collateral portion of the project is still ongoing, the logo has been decided upon, and so we're happy to reveal the newly-designed Allygn IT logo.

The move to Allygn IT from TRS Network Pros is more than just a fresh coat of paint for the brand. Instead it signifies a shift in the business away from acting as a "fix-it" shop for computers, networking, and phone systems, toward acting as a technology partner for small businesses.

The parallel lines represent an idea of mutual success, and become more closely aligned (if you'll pardon the pun) as they move from left to right, signifying the idea that utilizing an IT Partner, instead of a "break/fix" provider allows small business to break the normal cycle of lost productivity during technology failures followed by periods of normal activity and repair fees, replacing it with a steady and predictable flow of productivity, preventative maintenance, and predictable costs.

<rss:description> We don't get white Christmases here in Dallas, so when the ladies at The Croney Team asked us to design their new holiday card, I automatically thought of all the winter symbolism that stops making sense if you live in an area that doesn't get snow. The thought was, "Well, if I can't have a white Christmas the good old fashioned way, then I'll make one with what I have." Luckily, the Croney Team was down for the idea as well, so we got to build a white Christmas out of paper snowflakes, corrugated craft paper, and crumpled up copy paper.

      <rss:link>http://blog.ohtwentyone.com/blog/new-work-terrahawk-llc-booklet</rss:link>
<rss:description> When TerraHawk contacted us to design their new booklet for the IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police), which if anyone is checking started last weekend (October 3-7th), we knew we'd be working fast and hard to get this thing designed and printed inside of a week. We also knew that there wouldn't be a lot of time to plumb the depth of our creativity. It was one of those, “Don't try to be original. Just try to be good. 1 ” kind of projects.

So, armed with photos taken by the client, the layouts of two previous versions of the brochure, and a whole lot of notes about things to improve, we set out to design a 16 page booklet in 16 hours, including designing and imposing six sets of vehicle graphics on a photo of an existing truck.

Some sets were more difficult to achieve than others. This army truck involved recreating the correct three point perspective and lens distortion to match the pattern to the photo. That was also a problem with superimposing the vehicle over the background graphic in the original booklet, which we resolved by avoiding it altogether. Although it would have been possible to find or take photos with the matching vanishing point and lens distortion, it would have taken far more time than we had, or money than was in the budget.

      <rss:link>http://blog.ohtwentyone.com/blog/new-work-ACEP-chapter-websites</rss:link>
<rss:description> The American College of Emergency Physicians asked us to take a stab at designing the new template for their chapter sites, and we were glad to do it. In the past the chapters have been largely left to make their own decision regarding the aesthetics of their site (which, through our research, we've found is the case with a good many national non-profit groups that have state and local chapters) even though ACEP has hosted the sites and maintained the Content Management System for the sites.

The goal for the redesign was to make the sites simple to customize for each chapter by changing a couple of graphics, and create an easy to use framework that will stay clean and nice while being edited by non-technical staff through the use of Cascading Style Sheets and a very flexible, grid-based layout system.

We also took the opportunity to work in some modernism through the use of modern (and we do mean modern, not contemporary) typefaces and smooth, clean lines with lots of negative space.

<rss:description> ohTwentyone has learned that we will have four pieces featured in Crescent Hill Books' upcoming New Big Book of Layouts , published by Harper Collins. Our contributions will span the categories of Brochure Design, Website Design and Advertising.

The New Big Book of Layouts is the second in the rebooted " Big Book of..." series. The original "Big Book of..." series was a huge inspiration to many designers, and played a major roll in our educations and the evangelism of good design. It's a tremendous honor to be included in the new series.

The New Big Book of Layouts is scheduled to hit shelves at booksellers everywhere in May of 2010.

<rss:description> We're inredibly proud to announce that ohTwentyone has been awarded 10 (that's right, ten) American Graphic Design Awards by Graphic Design USA Magazine.

We entered a wide variety of work into the competition and we're really pleased to say that we won an award in every category in which we entered work. We're also really happy to continue to receive recognition for our logo design (4 of our ten awards are for logo design), which is an extremely competitive field, and is one of the most challenging forms of graphic design. We're also incredibly impressed that an award was given to the Croney Team Listing Book, which was an end-to-end product, written, art directed, and photographed by Jon Sandruck.

So, thank you, GDUSA, and the jurors of the competition. We're incredibly gratified by the recognition...and the stack of certificates we got in the mail. We'll try not to hang them someplace too conspicuous. ;-)

Now, with no further ado, here are the winning entries:

<rss:description> ohTwentyone is pleased to announce the launch of www.AlliedCompliance.com , the website of Allied Compliance Services, Inc; a DOT compliance/drug and alcohol testing based in Lubbock, TX with offices in Lubbock and Hurst, TX.

Allied performs drug and alcohol testing for companies who are required to maintain DOT compliance records for drivers and equipment operators, as well as the expanding market of companies who are not required to maintain compliance information but screen for alcohol and drugs for insurance or retention purposes, and the emerging necessity of testing student athletes for steroids, illicit drugs, and alcohol.

Aesthetic Notes

The most interesting aesthetic feature of the site is the stationary background and footer which always places the horizon of the background image at the bottom 20% of the page. The image is divided to accommodate the exaggerated horizontal nature of the footer and the less exaggerated nature of the top. Both images fade to white to allow for large monitors, and the proportions of each section adapt based on the size of the window it's being viewed on.
