Process Essay: Alliance Logo
I was recently commissioned to design the logo for Alliance Business Insurance and, as luck would have it, haven't accidentally destroyed my notebook yet, so I'm presented with the golden opportunity to document my logo design process.
I feel it's noteworthy that although I do have a general process for logo design, it changes on every project. First, I am always trying to improve it. Second, every client is different. Third, I think design is about discovery, and you have to go where tha process takes you. Although design is a process, it does have a result, and the service of that result needs to be the ultimate goal.
Okay, so now that I am down from my soap box, here's how I designed this logo.
Process Essay: The Dracul Logo
I was recently asked to design the logo for a new comic book based on the real life childhood of Vlad Tepes, aka Vlad "Count Dracula" the Impaler. It's the first logo in a really long time that I have done where I hand-lettered the type and developed a custom logotype without using an existing font, so I thought it would be an interesting case for a process essay. Now, let me begin at the beginning:
New Work: KeepOpen.com Site
As some of you know, Jon is also a partner in KeepOpen.com, a hosted content management system based on open-source software. It's been over a year since KeepOpen started taking clients and, although they've designed and launched sites for their clients, they had not tackled the design for their own site.
New Work: Southwestern Services
Southwestern Services is a Retail Contractor, meaning that they build-out, renovate, and maintain physical facilities for retailers. Their client include some of the best known brands in retail (Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Lowe's, PetSmart, GNC, etc...).
Their new site features a piece of technology that we're very excited about, a job map using a Google Docs Spreadsheet as its database, and using the Google Maps API to illustrate where and what SWS does.
The Blog is Alive
The new ohTwentyone website has been in the works for a long time (almost 3 years at this point) and in production for the last 2 months, and it's finally reached a place where I am confident turning on its most exciting new feature, the blog.
The new ohTwentyone blog is completely custom made and powered by KeepOpen.com's powerful CMS and News Engine, and will be a cornerstone of the new site. It currently features several sections of content, each with its own RSS feed, as well as an RSS feed for the whole site.
We're very excited to announce that, as of this entry, the blog is live.
Testimonial: ER/DR Shirt
"For the record, the ER/DR shirt is a great big giant hit! Everyone
was clamoring for the shirt at [the convention]. We’re thinking about
using it for an incentive for our graduating residents. Now that it’s
been such a huge success, with even our board members wanting to get
their hands on one, I’m more than pleased that we stuck to our guns for
this excellent design. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication."
New Client: Phelps Stokes Fund
ohTwentyone is pleased to welcome The Phelps Stokes Fund to our stable of clients. We'll be designing the graphics for their Plone-Based S.T.A.R. web platform.
Plone is a product that runs on Zope, the foundation on which KeepOpen.com's own CMS is based.
